Adults in Guiding

Through Guiding, adult women can develop themselves, make lifelong friendships, and give back to the community. As a volunteer working with youth, you can inspire girls and young women to be their best. Whether it’s a long term commitment or a short term project, there are opportunities to suit your lifestyle. Any woman 18 years and older who is prepared to make the Guide Promise can be an adult member. Adult Volunteer involvement is varied – you can share professional skills and hobbies, help with fundraising, be a social member, assist Leaders with Unit activities, hold a State role, or join a Support Group. 

Leaders

Adult women can become Leaders and work with girls and young women. Leaders are carefully chosen women who understand and care about the particular needs of girls, and enjoy sharing their expertise and life experience in helping to shape the future of young women. Leaders are responsible for actively encouraging girls to be their best and achieve their full potential. For more information please see the Leadership Roles below. 

All our Leaders attend regular training courses to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to carry out their roles. We also recognise your prior learning when you are becoming qualified as a Leader.

Leaders come from all walks of life, and all family and working situations, and work in a team coordinated by the Region Manager. All Adult members are bound to a Code of Conduct and all Girl Guides WA Leaders are required to complete online Child Safe Child Friendly modules in relation to policies and procedures regarding the protection of children from abuse. Girl Guides WA also complies with the Youth Worker requirements of the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian. All Girl Guides WA Leaders require a Working with Children Check and a current National Police Clearance. We can provide assistance with applying for these required checks.

Leader Roles

	Unit Leader
	Unit Leaders implement the Australian Guide Program in a Guide Unit. They help the girls to plan creative, fun-filled programs that reflect the principles of Guiding. They develop leadership skills through becoming qualified Leaders in the Australian Learning and Qualification Program.
	Assistant Unit Leader
	Assistant Unit Leaders are adult members who have made the Guide Promise. They assist the Unit Leaders in various ways and work with the girls. They develop leadership skills through completing some modules in the Australian Learning and Qualification Program.
	Unit Helper
	Unit helpers assist the Unit Leader at Unit meetings and activities in a part time capacity and work with the girls. They are adult members of Girl Guides Western Australia, committed to the principles of Guiding and may wear uniform.
	Outdoors Leader
	An Outdoor Leader may share specialised outdoor skills with girls or adults or provide support for other Leaders. They may take on this role because they have expertise in a particular area, such as outdoor skills, or because they are not able to make a regular commitment to a Unit. They hold a qualification as a Resource Leader in the Australian Learning and Qualification Program.
	Region Manager
	Region Managers head teams of Leaders in a larger area and provide the link between them and the State organisation.

Young Women (Olave Program)

Those aged 18-30 can join the Olave Program to extend themselves within Guiding (but are also welcome to join as Leaders).

Past Girl Guides (Trefoil Guild)

Our Trefoil Guild members enjoy fun and fellowship while building support for Guiding.
